I'm a proud member of the original Maxwell fan base from 1996 with the Urban Hang Suite and I was there, buying Embrya the day it dropped. As a fan, I was not disappointed at all. I was actually excited that he took such a stark turn from the first album which demonstrated his versatility. In all fairness, I had some experience working in the music industry so I know how it works. Embrya was bold and risky. We appreciated the risk taking by playing the album religiously around my way.

In maybe 2017 or 2018, I went to a show of his in LA and I remember the stark difference in reception to him doing songs from this album vs Urban Hang Suite. I was shocked because this album is so moving ( for myself and some others). But this album truly moves me emotionally in a way that Urban Hang Suite can’t touch. It’s a beautiful beautiful piece of art. Thank you for writing this.
